Cancer is a dreaded diagnosis, but not the deadly one that it used to be. Today, alternative methods of alleviating the ravaging symptoms of a disease that was once always a fatal diagnosis are available at varied places around the world. Today, many medical doctors are turning to herbal medicines in their private practice, and the use of crude extracts of plants, or whole plants and in recent years, some aspects of Chinese medicine involving acupuncture, herbal medicine are being tested to treat a myriad of cancers and for pain control. Many of these herbal remedies do not pose the same threat of dire side effects, as do some of the more traditional medicines and remedies.
Fungi including both inedible and edible mushrooms have been a few of the tested methods used by physicians, and studies are being done on many other herbs and assorted fungi for potential sources of new anti-cancer drugs. One new example study includes underground tuber-like growths of mushrooms that grow wild on tree stumps.
Few botanical preparations are used by physicians today and are distinctive from the traditional drug treatments available. Some do have roots in traditional practices but by their very use have been removed from the basis of herbal treatment as they are being so widely used in conjunction with traditional methods that their beginnings have become blurred.
